The Great Synergy is a serious and rare pact made between humans and dragons. The First and The Tyrant King were the first to enact The Great Synergy with the assistance of the Mages of the First Order (now known as The Elementals). When completed, the human lends their heart to the dragon in order to complete it. Dragons are born with incomplete hearts, but The Great Synergy fulfills the dragon heart with some very intimate side effects. The human and the dragon involved share their heart, but also other aspects of their lives. These include their memories, their feelings, their pain, and their lifespans. What happens to one of the participants happens to the other. While this seems detrimental to the duo, there are some advantages which are exclusively beneficial. These include use of the spatial linking, internal telepathy, and raising the chance of the dragon developing a Dyne. The most intimate aftermath of The Great Synergy is the feelings the two members share for each other. Many times, the Master Dragon and Synergist Knights have referred to the bond as brotherly or sisterly implying that their bond is as strong as sharing the same mother.

There are many things that are required to perform The Great Synergy. For starters, it appears that only members of the Rider family bloodline are able to perform The Great Synergy. This explains why Synergist Knights and Master Dragons have been gone from the public eye for so long. Mr. Rider, a huge proponent against The Great Synergy, raised his children to believe dragons were slaughtering monsters. As for his siblings, he had his brother exiled, and did not even know about his half-sister (Mrs. Case). With no Riders making bonds with dragons, the magical duos faded into myth.
The second item required for The Great Synergy is a Talisman. This also limits the amount of Synergist Knights/Master Dragons since there are only 6 elemental Talismans on the planet. And since a bond between dragon and knight is for life, only 6 can be done at a time. It appears that non-elemental Talismans are unable to forge The Great Synergy. Even Pandora's Die of Hope is only able to replicate The Great Synergy. It does not create The Great Synergy in its entirety, but rather a subdued version.
Since the discovery of the light Talisman in "A Dragon's Dyne", it appears that anyone can form a pact with a dragon as long as both participants are willing to go through the process. The Scale of The First created an entire armoy of Master Dragons and Synergist Knights in the finale the same way it did for King Arthur during The Despot War. Unllike the false synergy created by Pandora's Die of Hope, these multiple bonds appear to be legit and the actual legendary pact.
